What you say influences your thoughts What you think influences your brain. Your brain changes your body to align with your thoughts. Your words matter. Choose life-giving words that are sweetened by the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, gentleness, kindness, self-control, goodness, faithfulness, and patience (Galatians 5:22–23).
Dr, Caroline Leaf writes in Switch Your Brain On Every Day, “Our thinking, feeling, and choosing in response to life is a quantum signal that physically moves though the substrate of the brain, using it to store and express what we think via what we say and do, When we allow the Holy Spirit to help us choose The right kind of quantum signals, we store healthy, wired-for-love thoughts in our brains, which impact what we say and do and also the people around us.”
What she is saying is when you choose to take your thoughts captive and renew your mind, you plant the fruit of the Spirit into your non-conscious mind, which in turn enables you to respond to life with an attitude of love, joy, peace, gentleness, kindness, self-control, goodness, faithfulness, and patience.
Choose your words carefully. Not only choose love when talking with others, choose life-giving words of love when you think about yourself. Choose gratitude when your circumstances are less than ideal and you choose joy thoughts. Turn your worried thoughts to ones of trusting the great I AM and you choose peace.
Your words matter—not only what you say, but what you think. That’s why Paul tells us to take our thoughts captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) to the obedience of Christ. It is how we can transform our lives by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).
Your words matter. Choose life.
