Wait on the Lord

  • Deborah

We aren’t very good at waiting are we? Just the other night I was talking about this with the study group and the consensus was that waiting is perhaps one of the hardest things God asks us to do. Yet Scripture is full of admonitions to wait.

“Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.”
Psalm 27:14.

Waiting is challenging, but God promises so much more to us when we listen and wait for Him.

“Yet those who wait for the Lord
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.”
Isaiah 40:32

In both of these passages the Hebrew word for wait is “quvah”. According to Strong’s Concordance, the word means, “to bind together (perhaps by twisting); to collect, expect; gather together, look, tarry, wait.”

This isn’t a passive “sit-on-you-hands-and-wait-for-someone-else-to-do-something” kind of word. Even if it’s waiting for God. This is an active verb.

Actively waiting on the Lord means resting in His timing while you use the time to do any number of things like study, learn, heal, or train for the big vision He has given you. It doesn’t mean you actively work on the big audacious dream directly.

A time of actively waiting could be considered a season of preparation for you spiritually, professionally, emotionally, etc.

If you use your waiting time to prepare, you will be ready when God says, “Now is the time. This is the place.”

When you wait actively for God’s direction and His timing you will indeed mount up with wings of eagles and soar.

You will run and not get tired.

You will walk and not become weary.

Hallelujah!
