Self Control: The Fruit Nobody Wants to Eat
Today is a big day for me. I have published my first video teachings on the Video Teaching page. They fall under the umbrella “Soaring Into So Much More.” These teachings were birthed from the monthly gatherings of the “graduates” of the Created For So Much More study. The teachings are also the foundation for much of my conference modules. I am excited to present the three part video series on the fruit of the Spirit nobody wants to eat: self control. You can watch the video series here.
By way of introduction though, here’s a taste of what you will learn as you watch the videos.
Galatians 5: 22-23 is the foundation scripture for this series. Here the apostle Paul writes,
“But the fruit of the Spirit is joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such things there is no law.”
What is self control? Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as “restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or decisions.”
An example of a Biblical picture of the use of self control can be found in Proverbs 16: 32.
“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.”
Operating in self control means you are content to delay gratification and harnesses the fleshly reactions and desires to situations and circumstances that might bring about instant gratification. Spiritually self control is in use when we take our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
The good news is that this fruit that nobody wants to eat can be grown. Tomorrow I will share practical habits that you can implement in your life to grow all of the fruits of the Spirit, including this all important one.
Living a life of self control brings untold benefits and blessings. It is worth the effort to master this all important fruit of the Spirit.
