Last Friday night, Ms. Vertie reminded us all that we often answer to “lesser” names when God has given us “greater” names.
Vertie confessed that she had answered to “angry black woman,” “welfare mom,” and more. I confess that I have answered to “inadequate,” “not enough,” “entitled white woman,” and more.
Jesus calls us “redeemed,” “precious,” “worth going after,” “royalty,’ “perfectly and wonderfully made,” and so much more.
Monday, as I tuned in to my live stream exercise/dance class, I once again heard the song, “That’s Not My Name” by the Ting Tings. It is not a spiritual song at all, but was born out of frustration.
According to the drummer, “But when we look back at the lyrics we realize they’re all about frustration. In a way, she’s saying she wants to be heard. She wants people to know her name.”
I would add that she wants people to know her.
Give it a listen. You might just find yourself jumping around celebrating who God created you to be…not burdened by the labels that others want to assign to you.
