Punching Bag

  • Deborah

There are times when life throws you curve balls. There are other times when you want to say—like Tom Cruise’s character in the movie A Few Good Men—”And the hits just keep on coming.” Sometimes you feel like a punching bag. Here is where resilience comes into play. Paul speaks of this spiritual resilience in 2 Corinthians.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 2 Corinthians 4:8–9

He actually introduces this section by saying that is because we have the power of God running through us that we can experience spiritual resilience.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 2 Corinthians 4:7

You see, the resilience and strength to handle life’s punches do not come from ourselves. They come from the power of God within us and God working for us. God stands at the ready to strengthen your punch and to work in your situation.

“For I am the Lord your God, who upholds your right hand,
Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’
Isaiah 41:13

When you feel like a punching bag, think about the children’s toys that are weighted in such a way that they pop back up. That’s what you have in you through the spirit and power of God.

Do not fear.

Know that you have the God of the universe in your corner and He will help you.
