Music Monday: Vertie Townley

  • Deborah

If you have participated in any of my recent conferences you have met and experienced Lady Vertie Lorraine Townley. She is an amazing sister in the Lord and I am honored to have her as a part of my team. She will be very present in Nashville at Soaring With God to Flourish, April 21-22, 2023.

Recently I interviewed Vertie so that I could introduce her to you.

When asked when she began to sing, Vertie’s response was, “In the womb!” Having been born and raised in Detroit, Michigan she grew up with the Motown sound all around her. Literally. She grew up down the block from Smokey Robinson’s sister—so saw and heard him frequently—and one of Stevie Wonder’s early homes was just two blocks away.

The beginning of Vertie’s singing “career” in a shining example of overcoming the enemy’s attempts to silence the area of greatest anointing. She would faint every time she tried to sing a solo in her high school choir. Eventually people came to her rescue by showing her how to stand and breathe so that she could use that amazing voice God had given her.

Her musical beginnings were often listening and imitating other vocalists until the day that her father told her, “You don’t have to sing anyone else’s song. You don’t have to imitate anyone. You sing your own song.”

Soon after, a friend of hers began a community choir and invited Vertie to join. It was this friend that wrote original songs for Vertie to sing as the concert’s finale and gave her the freedom to go her own way with the song. She consistently brought the house down as she took flight with  her God given voice and ability to make things her own.

Vertie’s love for the last, the lost, and the least is evident in the volunteer ministry work she has done and continues to do in Paducah, Kentucky where she currently resides.

Vertie will be gracing us with a concert Friday night, April 21. I will be writing more about that tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Verties Favorite Scriptures:

Hebrews 12:2

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Phiippians 4:11

“Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”

Vertie’s’ Words to Live By:

“Be still and know. No matter what is happening in your life, God is there.”

AND

“God will be whatever you want Him to be.”
