Memorial Day and The Act of Remembering

I shall remember the deeds of the LORD:

Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.

(Psalm 77:11)

Today, May 31, 2021, is Memorial Day for those of us who live in the United States. It is a national  holiday set aside to remember, honor, and mourn the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It originated in the years following the Civil War. That bit of trivia struck home to me when my family moved to Florida from Michigan in 1968 and I found myself in school on Memorial Day. That’s because It wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday.

Another bit of trivia I learned just this year is that there is a national moment of remembrance that happens at 3:00PM local time. The act of remembrance fits right in with a “so much more lifestyle.” Remembering what God has done serves as a springboard for what He will do for you in your future.

Revelation 12:10 tells us that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. In other words, when we remember and speak of what God has done in our lives, we pave the way for Him to do it again.

Have you seen God make a way when there seemed to be no way? Are you looking at a situation that feels hemmed in with no next steps? Remember how the Lord worked on your behalf, believing that He will move mountains for you again.

Are you faced with loss, illness, resistance, hurdles that seem to tall to jump? Remember the deeds of the Lord and you pave the way through your challenges to victory.

It is good to remember. It is wise to recall, honor, and mourn those service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. So today, when you stop to remember their sacrifice, also recall what the Lord has done for you.
