Lessons From the Easel: One Step at a Time

  • Deborah
acrylic painting of God's path

My steps have held fast to Your paths.

My feet have not slipped. Psalm 17:5

This past ten days, I have tuned my spirit and ears to Heaven to complete the last of three painting commissions.

The inspiration and vision for the painting (which I will share after it has been delivered) was the sometimes hazy nature of following the Lord. When we ask the Lord for direction in our purpose and identity it is important to obediently take the next step without knowing for sure where it leads. The adventure requires trust in the One holding your hand. God led me step by step from beginning to end of the painting.

I was stuck after the first layer of paint went onto the canvas. The hues seemed too bright and did not reflect the cloudiness I was looking for. Our God is a practical Guide and a detailed Director.

That day —as I took a break for lunch—I heard, “Mix Raw Umber with gel medium and apply it across the painting to tone down the intensity of the color.” I did and the layer of Raw Umber and gel accomplished what I hoped.

Two days later, through the night, I heard, “Mix Smalt Blue hue, Pearlescent white, and gel medium to add the ethereal/Glory layer that you envision.” Never before have I added either of these two layers. But God is a better creator than I could ever be. So I did as I was told. It’s beautiful.

Finally, as I approached the end of the project I heard, “Paint a horizon line.” And “It’s about the sky.” Those were the final two pieces I needed to complete the work.

Throughout the journey to complete the commission I heard Holy Spirit remind me of the advice I often give and the words I try to live by. “Take the next right step that is in front of you. Leave the horizon and the destination to the Lord.”

Your job is to take the next step—one step at a time—in trust that Holy Spirit is directing your footsteps and will usher you into the amazing future He has for you.

One step at a time moves you forward.

One step at a time reveals the next step and the step after that.

One step at a time will get you through the twists, turns, and unexpected moments along the way.

What is your step for today? Take it in faith that the Lord holds your hand and will not let your feet slip.

**This painting is from the Fruit of the Spirit collection. It is based on self control. It is not the piece I write about here. I will share that later.
