Today is Maundy Thursday—a day set apart to remember Jesus washing of His disciples feet as well as the Last Supper.
Paul tells what we have come to call the “words of institution” in his letter to the church at Corinth when he writes:
“The Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
I looked up the meaning of the word “maundy” and discovered it is from the Latin word “mandatum” which means “mandate or command.”
Today we remember Jesus’ service to His disciples in the washing of feet and the breaking of bread.
I would like us to also consider and remember the commandment that Jesus gave His disciples after the breaking of bread.
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 13:34
Jesus exemplified a life of love when He washed feet and dined with His disciples.
Today, as you go about your preparations for this holiday weekend, how can you express more love to one another?
As you love one another with words and actions, love in remembrance of Christ’s love for you.
