How Much Do You Love Me?

  • Deborah

“We love, because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

“Love” is the theme for the fourth week of Advent.  In fact “Love” is the theme for the whole season of Christmas isn’t it? I believe the message of this season can be summed up in the familiar passage of John 3:16 which says,“‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.’”

That kind of sacrificial love is incomprehensible to me. I truly cannot fathom sacrificing either one of my sons for any reason. It is only by faith that I can accept the notion that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

I don’t understand that kind of love partly because it is beyond measure. I can only begin to grasp God’s unshakeable and infinite love when I funnel my thoughts from His love for the world to His love for me. Narrowing my thoughts also helps me to personally experience God’s love. This week I suggest you funnel your thoughts to consider God’s personal love for you.

If, as John writes in 1 John 4:19, you love, because God first loved you, then let’s take some time to sit with the Lord and ask Him about His personal love for you.  I invite you to soar with God into so much more of His love through this exercise. It has become an all-time favorite of my readers and conference attendees. Don’t miss it.

Soaring With God

Carve out 15 minutes or so. Find a spot that is comfortable and relaxing. You might even set the stage with a cup of tea, instrumental music, candles, essential oils, and the like. Involving your senses as you prepare to meet the Lord gives Him a runway on which He can land. We find Him when we seek Him with all of our heart (Jeremiah 29:13) which is the center of all of our senses.

Take whatever time you need to ask the Lord this question AND allow Him space and time to answer. I find that approaching this as a journal exercise works beautifully. I pray that you will hear your Lord clearly as you meet and soar with Him during this time.

Now sit quietly and ask the Lord, “How much do you love me?”

Take the time to settle your spirit and write what comes to mind. Think stream-of-consciousness. Trust that the Lord is meeting you in this moment. Allow Holy Spirit to whisper words or show you a picture. There is no right or wrong here! Listen to Holy Spirit. Write what you hear. Draw what you see. Trust that the Lord wants to speak to you today.

This exercise has been known to be life-changing! Please do not skip it.

Once you have completed this exercise, I recommend staying put and pondering what the Lord has revealed to you. Even after that additional quiet time, it may be time to walk around to allow God’s truth of His love for you to sink deeply into your heart, mind, and spirit.

This is an exercise that can be done daily. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Holy Spirit whisper how much He loves you. Jesus was born for you, Dear One.

That’s worth celebrating! Merry Christmas!
