The resurrected Jesus appeared to His disciples early one morning after they had been fishing. As they ate breakfast on the beach, Jesus spoke with Peter. This conversation is as much a commissioning for you and I as it was for Peter.
So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. John 21:15–17
Jesus asks you and I to tend His lambs, shepherd His sheep, and tend His sheep. Think about the word sheep.
It is singular. It is plural.
It is masculine. It is feminine.
It is young. It is old.
Tending, shepherding, and feeding God’s sheep is a call to minister to any and every person who has need of the touch of our Risen Lord.
Maybe you can love on one person today who needs God’s unconditional love.
Perhaps you have opportunity to bring the truth of resurrection power to a crowd of people.
Maybe you will speak to children or you will minister to seniors.
One or many.
Men or Women.
Young or old.
It matters not to Jesus.
His commission to you is to tend the sheep as He brings them to you.
It’s really as simple as that.
