Consider the Cost

working small on big dreams

“Every job eventually becomes a job,” my son commented the other day.  He is a self-employed entrepreneur doing what he is passionate about and what he was created to do.

He is right. No matter how passionate and called you may be, there are always tasks to be done that feel like “jobs” rather than joy.

Every calling —every purpose—comes with a cost. It is wise to take the time to think through your next step to ensure you are willing to pay the price and see the job through to completion.

Jesus explains it this way,

“‘For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” Luke 14:28-30

I don’t love “finishing” a painting: painting the edges of the canvas, adding a wire, varnishing, etc. but I know that it is the cost I must pay in order to be an artist.

I can’t say I enjoy taking care of ministry administration like filing expenses, but I accept the cost of doing what feels like the mundane in order to soar with God as I minister to others.

What is it that you need to consider before you embark on your next step? Here are just a few examples of things to think about.

Consider:

  • The time it will take away from other things in your life.
  • The mundane tasks that will need to be accomplished along the way.
  • The boundaries you may have to put into place in terms of relationships and time.
  • The expense of equipment, education, travel, etc.
  • The materials you may need.

The world waits for you to soar as who God created you to be.

Plan ahead. Consider the cost.

Ask the Lord to provide wisdom and insight in order to accomplish all that He asks of you.

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and [a]without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

Consider the cost.

Trust the Lord to provide all that you need.

Take flight and soar!
