We have a “heart issue” in America.
Last year 931,578 people in the US died of heart disease.
For the past 100 years, heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the US according to the 2024 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics published by the American Heart Association.
The statistics reveal that anywhere from one third to one half of American adults have hypertension or high blood pressure.
Heart disease is more than a physical problem. It is also a spiritual, mental, and emotional issue. Your spirit, your thoughts, and your emotions all affect your physical well being.
In Luke 4 Jesus tells the the synagogue that He came to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah wrote:
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And freedom to prisoners. Isaiah 61:1 (emphasis mine)
Jesus is the mender of broken hearts. His Word throughout the Bible offers many different paths to healing your heart that are non-physical in nature. Coupled with known physical habits and paths to healing, you truly can heal your “broken” heart.
Your path to healing can run through repentance and obedience.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
Your path to healing could run through joy.
“A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22
Your path to healing might run through the discipline of your thoughts.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” Philippians 4:6-9 (emphasis mine)
Finally, all paths to healing run through worship.
“Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you.” Exodus 23:25. NIV
This is just a few scriptures and examples of how we can influence our physical well being through our spiritual, emotional, and mental practices.
