As we begin our journey with the Lord’s prayer, let’s pause and ask Holy Spirit to underscore the truth that He has for you each in each and every petition.
Today we begin with the first phrase found in Matthew 6;9
OUR FATHER
Those two simple words speak volumes. First let’s consider the word “our.’
OUR
Every time you speak the Lord’s prayer and use the phrase “our Father” you acknowledge that you are not alone. You are one of God’s children. You are part of a family, a tribe, a body of believers. You are not alone.
You have brothers and sisters that stand with you, whatever your circumstance or need.
FATHER
There is so much to mine from that one title. Who is God the Father?
He is Creator—Provider—The Source of All Good Things.
He is love—eternal—all knowing—all powerful.
He is ever present.
If you look up the word father in the Aramaic Jesus would have spoken, this petition—Our Father—translates to, “Oh Thou, from whom the breath of life comes.”
Breath of life. Genesis 2:7 tells us that God breathed life into Adam.
“Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”
God breathed His life, His spirit into man and continues to do so. Put another way, God is as close to you as your breath.
When you pray, “Our Father” you acknowledge that you are not alone, that your Heavenly Father has all that you need, and that He is as close as your breath.
I’d say those are two very powerful words. So powerful that sometimes that is as far as I get when I pray The Lord’s Prayer.
It is all I need: Our Father.
🙏What remarkable insight!! Love thinking about this during a tough season—brother-in-law has pancreatic cancer.🙏
Thank you my Friend! I will pray for your family. We have been through it with my brother-in-law. Love you!
