Take the Step

  • Deborah

“‘Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses.’” Joshua 1:3

God told Joshua that He would give Joshua and the Children of Israel the land He promised to them. In the early chapters of the book of Joshua, the Israelites stand on the bank of the Jordan River. Lying across the river was Canaan—The Promised Land—that which they had dreamed about for 40 years.

When God promises you land, He can be counted on to deliver it. Where is the territory that the Lord has promised you? Do you stand on the bank of a river that denies you access to your vision of identity and purpose? Does the Jordan River you face appear to be a raging river too dangerous to cross? Are you waiting for the Lord to “pile up the waters” like He did for the Children of Israel?

Do not make camp on the river bank of your future. Your big dream can unfold before your very eyes when you take the steps the Lord asks you to take. I call this co-laboring with the Lord. In my experience God seldom drops opportunity in our lap when we do nothing more than pray.

God”s heart is to works with us to fulfill His destiny and purpose in our lives. He may not drop opportunity into your lap, but He does show you the way to go. He will lead you to the place your foot should be placed.

Take the step Holy Spirit is highlighting.  More often than not, God  will propel you forward  beyond that single step. Perhaps you feel like He is asking you to figuratively jump off a cliff. Take the leap. He will either supply a net or give you wings to soar.

Co-laboring with God means taking the next step on the path that you alone were created to walk. That could mean honing your skill or doing research. It could mean doing the work of invisible or unappreciated tasks. Whatever the step is, take it.

The Lord’s instructions were clear as Joshua faced the Jordan River. He was to send the priests ahead of the tribes into the Jordan River.

“‘It shall come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, and the waters which are flowing down from above will stand in one heap.’” Joshua 3:13

The Lord said He would wait until the priests took the step into Jordan River before cutting the flow of water. Verse 17 tells us what happened.

“And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.” Joshua 3:17

Would you like to cross your Jordan,—that which stands between you and God’s promises—on dry land?

Take the next step.

Rather than taking the step and then asking the Lord to bless it, ask the Lord how you can co-labor with what He is doing in your life.  Ask Him where, when, and how to take the next step He has for you.

He will meet you as you co-labor with Him. You will stand firm on dry ground and see His promises come to fruition in your life.

Take the next step.

Rest assured that your Lord and Savior will do the heavy lifting. It is His job to cut off the flow and pile up the water that hinders your access to His promises. Your job is to…

Take the next step.
