Do You Hear What I Hear?

  • Deborah

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Paducah, Kentucky—a 3 hour drive from my home. I spent the full 3 hour drive listening to a radio station that played nothing but Christmas music. As I drove and listened I was struck by how meaningful many of the songs were when I took the time to listen to every word.

Taking the time to listen is a great tip for staying mindful during the holidays and beyond.

Listening often requires that we stop where our mind is going at the moment to focus on what is being sung—or being said. Hearing what the speaker wants us to hear can take effort.

Pause what you are doing if need be.

Stop trying to think up a response.

Delete any previous emotions connected to the subject.

Listen to the words, the phrases, and the feelings behind the words. Be attentive to the moment whether you are in a conversation or listening to a familiar Christmas carol.

There, in that moment, you will hear far more than you can imagine.

You will hear what Holy Spirit is saying to you in your sacred now.

Merry Christmas!
