Change Your Atmosphere

  • Deborah

One way to bring stress relief in the middle of a busy day, week, or season is to change your atmosphere. You will bring rest to your mind, body, and spirit with these few easy remedies. Change your atmosphere could mean the atmosphere you find yourself or the atmosphere of the heart.

Music has a way of calming the nervous system in a way other things can’t. Your choice of which music may be different from anyone else’s choice. That is because we are each unique and are affected uniquely by different styles, genres, artists, or albums. The important thing is to know what type of music calms your soul.

Lighting can also have a big impact on the atmosphere you find yourself. I am a stickler for the type of light we have in our home (much to the dismay of my husband who is the one who shops for our light bulbs). With all the variation of brightness and hues out there, it is worth your time and effort to research which type of light suits and soothes you. As an artist I do recommend that you stay consistent throughout your home since you may not have any say so about your work environment.

Scent can also impact your mood and ability to rest in the midst of a busy season or day. Essential oils are an essential part of my atmosphere. Whether I am diffusing a calming blend, or put a dab or two on my wrists or back of my neck, I have learned to use the all important sense of smell to calm my nerves.

Check where your heart is at. Ask yourself if you have practiced gratitude lately. Again, there are many techniques like deep breathing, stretching, and tapping which can center you and calm your spirit and your nervous system.

Finally, speak out a scriptural truth that applies to your situation. Lately I faced a number of mind-stretching technology tasks. As I worked through them I found myself quoting Jesus in John 14:26,
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things.”

Wherever you are on the busy scale, these tips will help you maintain a rested spirit. I find when I rest my spirit I actually accomplish more with God’s help than I could ask or imagine.
